The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. ASF forms part of the National Physical Activity Plan and the Healthy Ireland vision where everyone can enjoy physical and mental and well-being to their full potential, and where well-being is valued and supported at every level of society and is everyone’s responsibility.

Health Promotion Initiative
The Healthy Ireland Health Promoting Schools (HPS) Flag is presented by the HSE to schools as an acknowledgement of their work in improving the health of their school communities. Health Promoting Schools (HPS) is not a once-off project, but a whole-school approach to all aspects of health and well-being. Pupils, staff, parents and guardians are consulted to identify priority health areas.

Green Schools Initiative
Green-Schools is Ireland͛’s leading environmental management and award programme, working with primary and secondary schools across the country. Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment Green-Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland).

Amber Flag Initiative
The Pieta House Amber Flag initiative enables schools and youth groups across the country to raise awareness of the stigmas which exist in their environments, and the stressors on the mental and emotional wellbeing of those within them. The programme encourages teamwork and student contributions and works with school guidance counsellors to include a peer-support element.

Discover Primary Science & Math Initiative
The Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme (DPSM) is part of Science Foundation Ireland’s Education and Public Engagement Programme, which aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students, teachers and members of the public. It introduces primary school students to science in a practical, hands-on, enjoyable and interactive way.

Next Step Programme
The transition from primary to post-primary can be a stressful event for all students. The Next Step programme is a transition programme for sixth class students designed to help them prepare for their move to secondary school. The programme encourages young people to build self-confidence, as well as to express any fears or concerns they may have.

Cycle Safety Initiative
St. Canice’s participates in the Cycle Safety Programme for primary schools. Training takes place in the school yard of the school for 6th class students. The course is approximately one hour for 6 weeks. All necessary equipment is provided. It is an All- inclusive Programme. (adapted to suit all abilities). All children will receive a Certificate of Participation on completion.
