Green School International Culture Day 2020!

This year we celebrated International Culture Day on Wednesday 12th February. This day is part of our efforts to maintain the Green School Global Citizenship flag for the second year. It is a great way of celebrating diversity and culture differences within our school community. The children get to experience new cultural traditions and customs and become more aware and respectful of other nationalities.

All classes decorated a hand which will be displayed in our hallways with pride – showing that we are all part of the global effort to keep the environment clean and green.

Classes read about mythical stories based on different cultures. Other classes focused on learning about the geography of the world – learning about continents, capital cities, countries within Europe and using atlases to locate certain countries in the world. In 6th class we were privileged to have a guest in, Cindy Yu, to celebrate Chinese New Year which we previously learned about. Cindy told us about the origins of Chinese New Year and also played a game, testing out our ability to use chopsticks. The children really enjoyed the afternoon, especially when Ella played her Chinese instruments, similar to a harp, called Guzheng. Thank you, Ella and Cindy, for your time.

5th class learned about Fair-Trade which was established to help support farmers in regions such as South America where pay is much lower for harder work. Fair Trade ensures farmers are paid fairly for their produce, helping to reduce poverty. It is important children understand how Fair-Trade works and how we can buy Fair Trade to help do our bit for reducing poverty in the world.

All our efforts towards our Green School flags can be seen on our Green School noticeboard.
